Poetics of Interiority
Born in a family of immigrants from Trinidad and Tobago and raised in Northern Virginia in the United States, I was fascinated by stories about race, national identity, and experiences of (un)belonging. Poetics of Interiority is a space to explore these topics and more by looking at all the ways we have invented interiority and made it a measure of our own humanity.
For centuries, books, art, and other media have explored what it means to be human. These images of a common humanity have depended on descriptions of the inner self or interiority. Interiority describes more than our thoughts, feelings, or soul. We understand our interiorities through the stories we tell each other about our humanity.
